Record Attendance at the 2020 5th Major at Lulu!

A record 125 paying golfers came out to the LuLu Country Club in Glenside, PA on August 31st for the 14th Annual Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce Philadelphia Golf Outing to raise money for Caring for Friends, an organization which is dedicated to providing food and friendship to seniors, kids and adults in the five-county Philadelphia region. Caring for Friends’ involvement in the delivery of meals to the homebound is especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, they served 1,400 seniors each week. Today, they provide food weekly to 28,000 seniors.

Jeannette Fournier, Executive Director of Caring for Friends, indicated that many family members must choose between feeding their children and feeding their own parents. Isolation from food has increased due to both unemployment and virus exposure issues. Children’s return to school and daycare, the arrival of flu season, and the effects of long-term unemployment are expected to increase the need for food provision in the coming months.

During the initial stages of the pandemic in the area, a food panic resulted in a breakdown of the supply chain. Yet as third-largest food bank in the area, Caring for Friends serves 130,000 people every week. Fournier commented, “It is impossible to get shelf-stable products”. NACC Philly, Golf Outing players, and other well-wishers filled the organization’s van with canned goods to capacity.

NACC Philly wants to thank our Outing’s major sponsors: BHI USA at the Platinum Level; Philly Shipyard at the Gold Level; AIG at the Silver Level and Hole Sponsors APEX Door, Lockheed Martin, Hyde Electric, Edelgard Kolling, Team Toyota, Steve Wilus, SP Adjusters and Adventure Alley.

We also thank the LuLu Country Club for hosting the event and thank all of our financial supporters, including Caring for Friends, who fielded their own golfing four-some.

It was LuLu’s third, successfully-hosted tournament since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Facilities were set up with proper social distancing measures.
